Why Record Every Nudge?

~1 in 175 pregnancies in the US ends in stillbirth.

50% of stillbirths are preceded by maternally-perceived
decreased movement in the final week.

30% of stillbirths are preventable with kick counting.

A message from Jess, creator of Record Every Nudge:In March of 2025, I lived a nightmare. I held my stillborn son, Ren, in my arms, simultaneously meeting him and letting him go for the first and last times. That day, I became a datapoint in a harrowing statistic: 50% of stillbirths are preceded by maternally-perceived decreased fetal movement in the final week. That was me. I had sensed reduced movement. I was even hospitalized for continuous monitoring and ultimately sent home when things looked okay...only to return to the hospital when it was already too late. When I became pregnant again, I carried an overwhelming responsibility to listen more closely than ever before to my intuition and to advocate for myself and my baby at every step. But in the wake of losing Ren, trusting my intuition felt complicated. If intuition wasn’t enough before, how could I rely on it now?Throughout pregnancy, we’re told to trust our gut if something feels “off”. But gut feelings alone aren’t always actionable. Gut feelings are hard to describe, hard to measure, and hard to communicate. The current standard is once-daily “kick counting” starting at 28 weeks of pregnancy: time how long it takes to feel ten movements and record the number. But this approach captures tiny snapshots, not patterns. Attending to baby’s movement for ~3% of your waking hours doesn’t reflect the full story of their day-to-day rhythms. And practically speaking, with up to hundreds of movements per day, there has not been an easy, frictionless way to record baby’s every movement to uncover those patterns.

So I built a way... I created a prototype of Record Every Nudge, a simple app paired with a pocket-size smart button, just in time to record my daughter’s very first nudges in my belly at 17 weeks. I recorded every one of her movements through pregnancy, all the way to her first breath in the world.Using Record Every Nudge in my own pregnancy allowed me to transform anxiety into awareness. Each click was a small acknowledgement, a reassurance, and a record of our connection. It gave me a way to visualize my intuitive sense of my baby’s well-being. And it gave me a way to communicate with doctors through data.Record Every Nudge exists to serve two purposes:To expecting parents: I offer Record Every Nudge as a tool to deepen your connection with you baby, to validate your intuitions, and to translate your baby’s movement patterns into meaningful data.To clinicians and researchers: I offer a window into an unexplored space: What does normal (and abnormal) maternally perceived fetal movement truly look like when we record every nudge? Can early changes reveal patterns that indicate clinical risk? How might this super accessible, relatively low-tech tool support both birth outcomes and maternal mental health?Record Every Nudge was built from loss and exists to support expecting parents in listening more closely to the life within. In Remembrance and Hope,
Jess
